Understanding Walkforward results

A Walkforward Result combines the out-of-sample performance from the completed segments.

The Result Review shows both the combined outcome and the segment-level details that produced it.

Combined OOS Performance

Combined OOS Performance gives the overall summary of the completed out-of-sample research.

The visible metrics can include:

  • Net P&L
  • Max Drawdown
  • Win Rate
  • Total OOS Trades
  • Profit Factor
  • Sharpe Ratio

These values are calculated from the combined out-of-sample trades across the completed segments.

The in-sample candidate Results are used to select configurations. They are not included in the final Walkforward performance.

OOS Performance

OOS Performance shows how the combined out-of-sample Result developed over the completed Walkforward segments.

The available views can include:

  • OOS Equity Curve
  • OOS Drawdown

The OOS Equity Curve represents the cumulative combined out-of-sample performance.

OOS Drawdown shows declines from previous highs in that combined out-of-sample equity.

Walkforward Timeline

The Walkforward Timeline shows how the in-sample and out-of-sample periods move through the dataset.

Each row represents one segment.

The timeline separates:

  • the in-sample selection period
  • the later out-of-sample evaluation period

For Anchored Walkforward, the in-sample period expands from the original starting point.

For Rolling Walkforward, the in-sample window moves forward while keeping its configured length.

This view connects the configured Walkforward structure with the periods used in each segment.

Net P&L by Segment

Net P&L by Segment shows the out-of-sample Net P&L produced by each completed segment.

Each bar represents one segment.

Positive and negative values show how each segment contributed to the combined out-of-sample Result.

This section provides a segment-by-segment view of the final Net P&L.

Configuration Snapshot

The Configuration Snapshot records the settings used for the Walkforward research.

Depending on the selected strategy and configuration, it can include:

  • Walkforward type
  • selection mode
  • in-sample period
  • out-of-sample period
  • segment movement setting
  • fixed strategy settings
  • parameter ranges
  • trading-cost settings

For intraday and daily datasets, the visible Walkforward Setup fields include Type, Mode, IS Trading Days, OOS Trading Days, and Step Trading Days.

The Configuration Snapshot provides the research context behind the Segment Results and combined out-of-sample performance.

Segment Consistency

Segment Consistency summarizes the completed out-of-sample segments and separately identifies any failed segments.

The visible summary can include:

  • Profitable Segments
  • Losing Segments
  • No-Trade Segments
  • Failed Segments
  • Average OOS Net P&L
  • Best Segment
  • Worst Segment

A completed no-trade segment remains part of the completed research sequence.

A failed segment is separate and is excluded from completed-segment performance calculations.

Best Segment and Worst Segment identify the segments with the highest and lowest out-of-sample Net P&L shown in the Result.

Segment Results

Segment Results provides a preview of the completed Walkforward segments.

The visible table shows up to 10 segment rows and displays the number shown out of the total available.

Each row can include:

  • Segment
  • IS Start
  • IS End
  • OOS Start
  • OOS End
  • Selected Parameters
  • OOS Trades
  • OOS Net P&L

Each row connects three parts of the Walkforward process:

  1. the period used for in-sample selection
  2. the parameter values selected for that segment
  3. the Result from the later out-of-sample period

The selected parameter values can remain the same or change from one segment to another because selection is performed again for each segment.

Combined OOS Trades

Combined OOS Trades provides a preview of the trades produced across the completed out-of-sample periods.

The visible table shows up to 3 trade rows and displays the number shown out of the total available.

The visible trade fields can include:

  • Entry Time
  • Exit Time
  • Direction
  • Entry Price
  • Exit Price
  • P&L
  • Exit Reason

These trades are part of the underlying combined OOS trade set used to produce the final Walkforward performance.
